His knowledge and commitment to the music is revered throughout the industry. From opening for Bob Marley back in 1973 to recently explaining sound systems in person to King Charles and Camilla, Gladdy has seen it, heard it and got the T-shirt.

Proudly recently receiving a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from the London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprises Trust, Gladdy Wax has played sound systems for over 50 years. As a callow youth he recalls sitting inside big bass speaker boxes and in 1966 (at the age of 14) he came to the UK.

Birmingham, his first UK home, was a great breeding ground for sound systems in the 1970’s. Gladdy at first played his own 'Leisure Sound' with his brothers and was then recruited to one of the best, the mighty 'Quaker City'. A move to London saw him recording with Dennis Bovel of Linton Kwesi Johnson & the Dub Band fame.

Stints on BBC Radio London, BRMB, WNK and various prime time slots on leading community stations brought Gladdy to the attention of Reggae fans of all ages and his Notting Hill Carnival sessions, with his gigantic Gladdy Wax soundsystem are attended by young and old from all around the globe coming to sample the delights of one of the world’s richest reggae collections, along with guest artists and djs.

Gladdy houses one of the most crystal clear sounding High Power Sound Systems in the UK, attracting countless music experts and fans. Gladdy's is unparalleled in the world of DJaying and continues to make his mark. He is globally heralded as a key figure in the establishment and proliferation of Jamaican music and the continuation of the traditional Jamaican Sound System in the UK. Today,

Gladdy is one of the worlds leading Reggae, Ska, Rhythm & Blues intelligentsia and continues to share his rich musical heritage with people of all races, regularly bringing reggae to the people at sessions all around the UK.


British Association of Sound Systems

The BASS member sound systems are predominantly made up of the Sound Systems that you will find located at the annual London Notting Hill Carnival (Europe's largest street festival) which takes place every year over 2 days, during the August Bank Holiday weekend in London.
